ExpatForced to be an Expat?
The people of my country are some of the most scattered all over the world. It is estimated that roughly ten percent of my country's entire population are scattered all over the world, with most of them serving in their chosen countries as long-term expats. While expats from other countries transfer because of reasons like the weather, a more favorable tax system, and a change of view, the expats from my country go overseas because of the need to provide for their families and get higher wages. This situation is so unique to my country that there are actually statistics keeping track of people abroad who are there specifically for work.
It's a world of difference. What you have here are expats who would not otherwise go out of the country if there were only enough opportunities in their own land, expats who chose to be away from their families in order to provide for their well-being. It's a sad reality, really, and I can only sigh at how awful the situation is for many of these overseas workers. It is not difficult to become an expat if you are in a country that can be interesting enough for the person concerned, but there will always be days when an expat pines for his mother country. I can only guess how the same is truer for people whose case is similar to the ones I cited above. My dad, who also became an overseas worker in the Middle East, would only go home only once every one or two years, and he would always exclaim that if only he had a choice, he would not go back anymore but we were kids then and we had a lot of requirements that need to be fulfilled. But look at it now, the child, which is me, is starting to become an occasional expat himself. I just wish that, this time, it's because of the traditional reasons why expats go abroad.
