ExpatWhy Learning a New Language is Important
Part and parcel of being an expat in most countries is studying a new language. While English is the lingua franca of the world, you will put yourself in a more favorable position among locals if you know their native language. In certain countries, English is not widely spoken at all, thereby increasing the necessity for studying it. It can be quite a challenge if this is your first time to be an expat, but it can definitely be done.
The good thing about learning a new language during the course of being an expat is that you are at least surrounded by locals who speak the language in a daily basis. Regular exposure to the language is essential when learning it. Even in language school, you will be required to speak it during regular conversations so interacting with locals only enrich this experience. Since you are already studying the language, you might as well talk with your family in this other language and start referring to things around your house in that. What I would usually do is to translate my phone's settings so that it uses that target language in order to maximize exposure. You would probably try to learn the language even before you go and settle in the country of your destination. This is good because you can at least become quite familar, but no amount of learning outside will prepare you for the accent and the speed by which locals speak in that tongue. So it is still always best to bring with you a translator during the course of your study. A handy guidebook can aid you through the tough situations when you couldn't understand the words uttered by the people you are talking with. Learning a new language is not something that you will be able to learn overnight. Just be patient and remember that practice makes perfect. You will find that, by learning a new language, you go deeper in understanding the prevalent culture of your chosen country. Enjoy! You can talk about...
